1851 Victorian America Mulled Wine

Mulled wines were very popular in the Victorian era and in fact what we know as a mulled wine today — the general ingredients, that is — comes largely from the Victorian era. Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts has recreated a 1850s Victorian village of America and in one of their newsletters they reproduced a mulled wine recipe first published in the 1851 book "Directions for Cookery".

Victorian America Mulled Wine Ingredients

  • 1 pint water
  • 1 nutmeg
  • 2 sticks cinnamon
  • 1 Tbsp cloves
  • 1 quart wine

Victorian America Mulled Wine Recipe

"Boil together, in a pint of water, a beaten nutmeg, two sticks of cinnamon broken up, and a table-spoonful of cloves slightly pounded. When reduced to one-half, strain the liquid into a quart of wine, set it on hot coals, take it off as soon as it comes to a boil, and sweeten it. Serve it up hot in a pitcher, surrounded by glass cups, and with a plate of rusks."
