Mimosa Champagne Cocktail

Mimosas are associated very strongly with Mother's Day and brunches. It may be that more mimosas are drunk on Mother's Day than any other day of the year. Nevertheless, a mimosa is a great wine cocktail for any special occasion and any time of the day.

There is just something about the bubbly texture of champagne or sparkling wine combined with the fruity, sweet flavors of orange juice — when combined in champagne flute, the mimosa is almost irresistible.

Mimosa Ingredients

Ingredients for Mimosa Recipes

  • Champagne or Sparkling Wine (1 bottle, chilled)
  • Orange Juice (1 container, chilled)

Serving Size: One bottle of champagne or sparkling wine and one container of orange juice should make 12-16 mimosas, assuming each mimosa is served in standard 6oz champagne flutes.

Optional Ingredients for Mimosas

  • Fresh Oranges
  • Fresh Strawberries
  • Crushed Ice
  • Orange Liquer (Grand Marnier, Tripe Sec)
  • Sprite, 7-UP, or another lemon-lime soda

Mimosa Preparation

Equipment Needed for Mimosas

  • Champagne Flutes
  • Knives to Cut Fruit

Preparation Time for Mimosas

  • 5 minutes for cutting the fruit
  • 5 minutes for mixing a drink

To ensure quick preparation, be sure that your ice is already crushed, if you have decided to include it.

Mimosa Recipes

Basic, Traditional Mimosa Recipe

  • Optional: add a little crushed ice to a champagne flute
  • Fill champagne flute half way with champagne or sparkling wine
  • Fill champagne flute the rest of the way with orange juice
  • Stir very gently to mix the orange juice and champagne
  • Garnish with fresh orange slices or fresh strawberries, if desired

Note on Proportions: the ratio of champagne to orange juice in a traditional mimosa recipe is 1:1, but you can vary these proportions based on your personal taste. If you want a fruitier mimosa, use more orange juice. If you want a bubblier and drier mimosa, use more champagne.

Grand Mimosa or (Big) Mama Mimosa Recipe

  • Optional: add a little crushed ice to a champagne flute
  • Fill champagne flute half way with champagne or sparkling wine
  • Fill champagne flute the rest of the way with orange juice
  • Add 1 to 2 Tablespoons of Grand Marnier or Triple Sec
  • Stir very gently to mix the orange juice and champagne
  • Garnish with fresh orange slices or fresh strawberries, if desired

The orange liqueur adds both kick and flavor, so you may need less orange juice as you add more orange liqueur. Grand Marnier is preferable to Triple Sec because the flavor is generally much smoother with less alcohol burn. It's also more expensive, though.

Virgin Mimosa or Non-Alcoholic Mimosa Recipe

  • Optional: add a little crushed ice to a champagne flute
  • Fill champagne flute half way with Sprite, 7-UP, or other lemon-lime soda
  • Fill champagne flute the rest of the way with orange juice
  • Stir very gently to mix the orange juice and soda
  • Garnish with fresh orange slices or fresh strawberries, if desired
