The 2007 Carl Reh Riesling should go well with many different Chinese dishes and is worth trying with anything spicy. However, it's probably best to try it with dishes that have at least a bit of sweetness as well. That should bring out the best characteristics of the Carl Reh Riesling.
Color & Clarity
The color of the 2007 Carl Reh Riesling are a pale yellow with a bit gold, a clear center, and a greenish tinge around the edges.
Nose
The aromas of the 2007 Carl Reh Riesling have a pronounced mineral edge; in fact, that's just about all you can smell: mineral.
Palate
The flavors of the 2007 Carl Reh Riesling are also very strong with minerals, but with the addition of tartness and tingly edges. This is a light-bodied Riesling that is medium sweet, has a crisp acidity, and is overall well balanced.
- Mongolian Beef: When paired with Mongolian Beef the 2007 Carl Reh Riesling is less sweet and more mineral; if that were it this would be a good combination but the food becomes more spicy and loses some flavor, thus lowering my opinion of this pairing.
- Curry Chicken: The Carl Reh Riesling becomes sweeter and more mineral with the curry chicken and while it's also spicier, it doesn't loose any flavor. Overall, then, this is a good combination.
- General Tso's Chicken: This was the best combination, perhaps because the General Tso's Chicken is sweeter than the other dishes. The 2007 Carl Reh Riesling becomes drier and much more aromatic.
- Cheese Wontons: When paired with cheese wontons, this Riesling becomes drier and more mineral in flavor.
Bottom Line
The 2007 Carl Reh Riesling should go well with many different Chinese dishes and is worth trying with anything spicy. However, it's probably best to try it with dishes that have at least a bit of sweetness as well. That should bring out the best characteristics of the Carl Reh Riesling.
