The flavors of the Crios de Susana Balbo 2007 Malbec are dominated by berries, cherries, some smoke, and even perhaps something like a cigar. Although relatively moderate in strength, the flavors here are a bit stronger than some other Malbecs you might find.
Color & Clarity
As is standard with Malbecs, the Crios de Susana Balbo 2007 is a deep, dark purple-red that is completely opaque. In the right light, the Crios de Susana Balbo appeared a bit cloudy, though it was difficult to tell for sure.
The aromas of the Crios de Susana Balbo 2007 Malbec weren't too strong, but they were distinctly fruity consisting of berries, black cherries, and a bit of strawberry. The nose is not as dark as one can find with other Malbec wines from Argentina, but there was nevertheless a bit of smoke and spicy.

Although relatively moderate in strength, the flavors here are a bit stronger than some other Malbecs you might find. As a point of comparison, the Crios de Susana Balbo is not quite as spicy in its flavor as the 2006 Terrazas de los Andes Reserva Malbec.
This Crios de Susana Balbo is fairly dry with crisp acidity and a medium body. The round tannins produce a nice feel in the mouth and help extend the finish.
Both Swiss and sharp Cheddar cheeses work fairly well when paired with this wine, but Feta doesn't work well at all and I wouldn't recommend soft goat cheeses in general. Romano is acceptable, but both aged Parmesan and aged Gouda are very interesting and I'd recommend trying them with the Crios de Susana Balbo Malbec.
As far as main dishes go, barbecued pork is a decent choice and I think that other barbecued meats would also do well. Pasta with a vodka cream sauce, however, was a poor choice because the Crios de Susana Balbo simply overpowered it. Pasta with a stronger sauce, though, might stand up to this Malbec much better.
The Crios de Susana Balbo Malbec might work well in some tomato-based pasta sauces — not those that cook for a long period of time, but perhaps those that are fresher so the fruit flavors of the Malbec have a chance to express themselves. It might also be good with chicken and pork dishes that call for red wine.
Dominio Del Plata Winery
Susana Balbo runs the Dominio Del Plata with her husband, Pedro Marchevsky, where they create wines made from Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Torrontes, and Syrah grapes. They also Crete a premium blend of Bordeaux grapes called Brioso.
Crios de Susana Balbo is Spanish for "the children of Susana Balbo," a fitting label for a wine created by famed Argentine winemaker Susan Balbo. The phrase Crios de Susana Balbo carries with it connotations not just of creation, though, but also care and love, both of which appear to be applicable.
Susana Balbo is an important figure in the Argentine wine production and consults with other wineries around the world. Crios isn't her only line of wines but this one is clearly designed to be enjoyed while they are young rather than cellared for a few years for development.
