Glassware is almost an entire world unto itself, with so many different options, styles, and prices to choose from. For casual drinking, you can use almost anything and still enjoy your wine, but if you are serious about tasting and appreciating wine there are a few characteristics which make some wine glasses superior to others.

You don't have to spend a lot of money for good wine glasses, but some of the best can be pricey.

 

How Many Wine Glasses Do I Need?

One common myth about wine is that you need special wine glasses for each different kind of wine. It is not, however, a wine myth that a lot of people adhere to — probably because so few people can afford to have different wine glasses for each kind of wine. Unfortunately, this seems to create a backlash in which people decide that if they aren't going to have different glasses for each wine, then any old glass is good enough for drinking wine. A little wine glass moderation is needed here.

Best Shapes for Wine Glasses

The single most important thing you need to pay attention to when choosing the right wine glasses is the wine glass shape. The wrong shape in a wine glass will completely alter the wine tasting experience, even to the point where you can't properly examine or smell the wine in order to evaluate it. You don't necessarily need to get a different glass for every type of wine - though that is possible - but you should try to have a different glass shape for white wine, red wine, and sparkling wine.

Yes, wine glasses really can make a big difference in how wine tastes. In principle, you can use anything to drink wine out of and if you're drinking especially cheap wine, it's unlikely that your choice of glass will make much difference. To really get the most out of good wine, though, you should pick your wine glass with care and attention. The more care you give to buying and tasting wine, the more care you should give to having the right wine glasses.
