Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc 2008 Tasting Notes

Color & Clarity
The 2008 Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc is very, very, pale yellow with just a hint of green around the edges. Overall the clarity is bright and clear.

Nose
There are some nice, positive fruity and floral aromas in the Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc. The nose is clearly young and dominated primarily by citrus.

Palate
The taste of the 2008 Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc can be described as crisp and light, zesty and lemony. Although quite crisp, the acid is not overwhelming or distracting; on the contrary, it balances very nicely with the citrus, lemon flavors to make it a refreshing Sauvignon Blanc that is good to just sip alone or to pair with the right foods. The Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc is, however, better when cold — the balance between the acid and flavors declines noticeably as the wine's temperature rises.

Overall the Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc is "food friendly" and should work well enough with a wide variety of dishes, though it seems as though seafood is a popular combination.

Food Pairing

Pairing Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc with Cheeses

  • Cheddar Cheese: The Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc pairs nicely with cheddar cheese and I would definitely eat them together again.
  • Aged Gouda: This is also a good pairing overall, though the Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc seems to cause the Gouda to lose a bit of its complexity and nuttiness.
  • Chevre: When paired with chevre, the Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc becomes a bit sweeter and I expect the same would be true with other goat cheeses.
  • Feta: This was also a good pairing and I would have Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc with Feta cheese again.

Pairing Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc with Main Dishes

  • Pasta with Tomato Sauce: One of the popular features of Suavignon Blanc is its ability to bring out herbal flavors in food you pair with it and that's definitely true here. Although the 2008 Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc is a young wine without noticeable herbaceous flavors of its own, it does a very good job bringing out the basil flavors in a pasta dish made with tomato sauce. I would definitely recommend this wine to pair with other dishes where herbs play an important role.

Recipes
The 2008 Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc is a young, simple wine that is not characterized by deep or complex flavors. It would be a mistake, I think, to try to add this wine to any recipes you are making if you expect it's flavors to really add something to your dish.
